Justification for Working At Home Minimize

Justification for Working At Home

Posted in [Business Decisions] By Blog Editor

Working from home was a dream of mine the moment that I had a 2 hour commute to work and had kids at home.  It is very hard to work out an emergency when you are 2 hours from where your roots are.

My home office has always been better supplied than most of the offices that I have had to commute to which has always made it easy to get more accomplished in a setting with the right tools.  There is usually a specialized tool for every job and if you have it, it will make you more productive and my home office has everything one needs to be productive.  So that is where the justification began.  Starting with baby steps and being away from the corporate office a few days a week to earning the trust of employers.  Then  came demanding the ability to work from home full time when the company that I worked for had "office pets" and during flea season I wore flea collars around my ankles to keep from being eaten alive (flea collars for humans is not recommended but we do what we have to do).

The fight to work at home has been long and just.  The fight was never so easy as when I started doing consulting and was seen by employers more as a consultant rather than a employee.  I seldom have a consulting opportunity or W2 job now where concessions are not been made for working at home.

I have also never been so productive as during the opportunities to work from home.  For many reasons my work productivity increases when working at home.  Take for example the commute time that is usually spend driving to the office, this time can now be shared, if not spent, doing work for the company that I work for.  Then without a commute home in the evening a home worker is so appreciative that the workday usually creeps into a much longer work day.  Another few examples include a more productive work environment because I am better set up equipment wise with everything I need at my fingertips.  When working at home there is always a feeling of gratitude and desire to prove that one is putting in the work time so an average work day is much longer than if reporting to an office every day.  And last but not least, the time spent working instead of water cooler hoping increases productivity again.  The right employee can be more productive working from home than working at an office each day.
